The prayer you do not have words for

On the Spirit who intercedes when language fails.

The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Romans 8:26

There are seasons when prayer feels like trying to remember the words to a song you used to know by heart. You open your mouth and what comes out is a sound, not a sentence. A sigh. A sort of complaint that is not really directed anywhere. Sometimes you stop trying.

This is the place where I most want to remind you of Romans 8. The Spirit prays for you when you cannot. With groanings, Paul says — that is the word he chooses. Not eloquence. Not theology. Groanings.

You do not have to manufacture a tidy prayer for the Lord to be at work in you. The breath of God is in you already, doing the praying you cannot do. Your job, in such a season, is not to perform a prayer life. Your job is to stay near.

Light the candle. Open the window. Make the tea. Be in the room. The Spirit is already on His knees.

with you in this,
